Sumbawa
Whale Shark Tour

Seasonal, October to March

Whale sharks traditionally congregate in Sumbawa waters around wooden fishing platforms known as bagangs starting in October.

We intentionally avoid the spot where tourist operators actively feed the whale sharks, allowing us to approach these magnificent creatures with respect. Seeing a whale shark is never guaranteed. What we can guarantee is how we go about it.

At BlueEmOcean, we offer only ethical whale shark encounters, built for sustainable, lasting blue ecotourism.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

How it works and why our tours are designed this way

We are committed to providing a sustainable experience. We do not feed the whale sharks, and we avoid areas crowded with boats and snorkelers. You meet these animals in the wild, behaving naturally, with as little disturbance as possible.

Because the whale sharks are not fed, we cannot predict when they will appear. That is why we do not run the tour on fixed dates. Local fishermen let us know when whale sharks have been spotted, and we plan the trip from there.

Whale Shark Tour Schedule

On the night prior, the fishermen will contact us to inform us whether whale sharks have been spotted in the area.

We make the decision to head out in the evening and depart from the resort at around 3:00 a.m.

From BlueEmOcean, the boat ride to our destination takes approximately 2 hours.

Typically, we enter the water at sunrise, enjoying time snorkeling to observe these mighty creatures.

By around 8:00 a.m., we begin our return journey to the dive resort, arriving at BlueEmOcean around 10:30 a.m.

What if we do not encounter whale sharks?

If we do not encounter the whale sharks during our first attempt, we will make a second attempt on the following day.

Please note that:

  • No refunds will be issued if we fail to see whale sharks the second time, as we cannot guarantee the movements of wildlife.

  • A refund will be issued if the boat cannot go out because of sea conditions.
